DTI-EU conducts seminar on Low Voltage Equipment

The Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Product Standards (DTI-BPS), conducted a two-day Seminar on the Enforcement & Market Surveillance Guidelines for Low Voltage Equipment (LVE) and Quality Infrastructure for LVEs. The seminar, in line with the Philippines and the European Union’s joint project, Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA), was held from 06-07 June 2012 at the 6th floor Conference Hall of St. Giles Hotel in Makati Avenue, Makati City.

 Around 75 participants from the DTI offices, industry, academe, and consumer groups attended the said two-day event. The seminar made the industry aware on the country’s existing quality infrastructure and legal framework for LVEs that needs improvement to further the protection for consumers and heighten industrial competitiveness of electrical & electronic products in the market. Through the seminar, information and insights were gathered from participants for the finalization of Market Surveillance Guidelines for LVEs based in the Department Administrative Order (DAO) 3:2008.

 The speakers from the European Union were TRTA-2 key expert Mr. John Echanove and short term expert Engr. Daniel Straus, who in turns presented and explained the importance and main challenges of Market Surveillance (MS) and quality infrastructures for LVEs including the implementation of DAO 3.

 The seminar speakers include Engineers Samson Paden (BPS-SCD) and Gerardo Maglalang of DTI-BPS, Chair of the new ASEAN Joint Sectoral Committee for Electrical and Electronics (JSCEE), Laboratory Manager Johnny Quinto of Solid Laguna Corporation Testing Laboratory (SLCTL), and Mr. Andrew Yan, Marketing Manager from Philips Electronics and Lighting. Engineers Paden and Maglalang discussed the current situation of Market Surveillance in the Philippines and in the ASEAN member countries while Mr. Quinto and Mr. Yan lectured on the main challenges and opportunities for laboratories and local manufacturers & importers on the current quality infrastructure for LVEs.
