The Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) again celebrates the importance of standards in upholding the Filipino consumers' right to safety through the National Standards Week (NSW), held every October 08-14 of each year. NSW is celebrated alongside the World Standards Day (WSD), which is held every 14th of October. This year’s NSW adopts the WSD theme, “Video standards create a global stage”. The DTI-BPS recognizes that video is the modern medium of expression and that standards are central to industry’s ability to meet rising demand for video, one of the most bandwidth-intensive applications running over global networks.
The World Standards Day (WSD) celebration is led by the major international standardization organizations namely, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The DTI-BPS is the official member representative of the Philippines to the ISO and IEC.
Standards Essay Writing and Poster Making Contests
Kicking off this year’s celebration is the holding of the Bureau’s 9th Standards Essay Writing Contest and 3rd Poster Making Contest for Senior High School students within the National Capital Region (NCR). This is organized by the DTI-BPS in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) – NCR. The activity is along-side a Broadcasting Seminar for student participants conducted by Konsyumer Atbp. (KATBP) entitled: Seminar on the Use of Media for Consumer Protection. These three (3) events are to be held at the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) on 11 October 2019.
KATBP is DTI’s consumer education radio program, a partnership between the DTI-Consumer Protection Group (CPG) and the ABSCBN Broadcasting Corporation for consumer advocacy. The DTI-BPS is one of the Bureaus under the CPG.
Certified Products Market (CPM)
One of the functions of the DTI-BPS is to regulate certain critical products in the market to ensure its safety of use. These particular products are required to bear the Philippine Standard (PS) Quality and/or Safety Certification Mark and the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Certification Mark. To promote the PS and ICC marks to consumers, the DTI-BPS is again setting up the Certified Products Market (CPM) at the front sidewalk of the DTI Main Building, 361 Sen. Gil Puyat Ave. Makati City. Discounted PS- and ICC-marked electrical devices, lighting sets, home appliances, and consumer products will be showcased and sold in this special market on 14 to 16 October 2019, from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
The Certified Products Market (CPM) is held alongside the Diskwento Caravan, one of DTI's regular projects where the agency partners with the manufacturers, distributors and local producers to sell basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPC) at discounted prices. For this year, the Diskwento Caravan will also feature some products of PWD (Persons with disabilities) entrepreneurs.
