DTI releases guidelines to create the national committee for IEC

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) releases the Terms of Reference (TOR) or the Memorandum Circular No. 18-05 for the Department Administrative Order (DAO) No. 16-02, Series of 2016, entitled “The Creation of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) National Committee of the Philippines (NCP)”.

The DTI-BPS established the TOR to effectively implement the DAO 16-02 Series of 2016. DTI-BPS Director James E. Empeño explains, “The Bureau expects the IEC-NCP to lead in setting the strategic directions, standardization programs on electrotechnical products and services in the country, and, manage them throughout the country. The creation of the IEC-NCP shall ensure that the government and private sector are represented in the IEC and will actively participate in relevant programs and activities.”

The IEC-NCP shall represent the country’s electrotechnical interests in the IEC’s management, standardization and conformity assessment work; serve as focal point in developing relevant policy positions based on consensus; represent relevant stakeholders in its interactions with the IEC and serve as the point of contact for coordinating the national opinion on relevant issues.

The upcoming activities for the IEC-NCP will be the election of IEC-NCP President and the establishment of operating procedures and work instructions.

The IEC-NCP is composed of representatives from BPS Technical Committee (TC) 71, Mr. Jessie Robert P. Mallonga, acted as IEC-NCP President, BPS Assistant Director, Atty. Marimel D. Porciuncula as acting secretary, BPS Standards Development Division Chief, Engr. Mario U. Gaudiano as acting administrator. All BPS electrotechnical committee members are considered members of the IEC-NCP.

The International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) is the world’s leading organization that prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.

The DTI-BPS is the National Standards Body of the Philippines. It is the Philippines’ member to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
