DTI-BPS holds Technical Committee Forum

About 300 participants from various government agencies, industry organizations, professional associations, testing institutions, manufacturers and exporters were gathered for the Philippine National Standards Congress, Technical Committee Forum 2018 held last 12 October 2018 at the Crowne Plaza Manila, Ortigas, Pasig City. The whole day event was one of the bureau’s major activities for the celebration of the National Standards Week (NSW) held every October 8-14 and in observance of the World Standards Day (WSD), held every October 14, annually.

This year, DTI-BPS has invited resource speakers and subject-matter experts on topics relevant to the adopted WSD theme: “International Standards and the Fourth Industrial Revolution”.

The speakers from the government sector were: Ms. Estrella Turingan, Division Chief from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) who discussed the government's Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2017-2022, the first of four medium-term plans towards the AmBisyon Natin 2040 vision; Commissioner Raymund P. Liboro of the National Privacy Commission (NPC) who discussed on Data Privacy and Protection online; and Ms. Genalyn Macalinao, Policy Lead of the Cybersecurity Bureau of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) who presented about Cybersecurity and information and communication technologies (ICT).

The speakers from the industry sector, on the other hand were: Mr. Allan Tan, Board Director of the Philippine Software Industry Association on the topic of Robotics Process Automation (RPA) & Artificial Intelligence (AI); Engr. Enrico Delmoro, Board Member of the Professional Regulatory Board of Electronics Engineering who discussed about the interconnection of computing devices, mechanical and digital machines known as the internet of things, or IoT and its relation to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC); and Mr. Jessie Robert Mallonga, Acting President of the International Electrotechnical Commission - National Committee of the Philippines (IEC-NCP) and Engr. Eric Ordaniel of the Sharp Philippines Corporation who collaboratively presented about the IEC-NCP and the IEC Young Professional Program.

Atty. Ruth B. Castelo, Undersecretary of the DTI-Consumer Protection Group (DTI-CPG), in her keynote message commended the DTI-BPS and the Technical Committee members and officers’ for their continued efforts in standards development and underscored the relevance of the collaboration of both the government and the industry in creating a safer environment through standards. Other DTI representatives who went on stage were DTI-CPG Assistant Secretary, Atty. Ernesto V. Perez, Engr. James E. Empeño, Director of the DTI-BPS, Atty. Marimel D. Porciuncula, Assistant Director of the DTI-BPS and Engr. Mario U. Gaudiano, Chief of the BPS Standards Development Division.
