The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) adopts the following International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards on bamboo structures as Philippine National Standards (PNS):
1. PNS ISO 19624:2020 Bamboo structures – Grading of bamboo culms – Basic principles and procedures
2. PNS ISO 22157:2020 Bamboo structures – Determination of physical and mechanical properties of bamboo culms – Test methods
The PNS ISO 19624:2020 specifies the grading procedures required to achieve the degree of reliability intended for the structural application of bamboo culms while PNS ISO 22157:2020 specifies the test procedures for specimens obtained from round bamboo culms. Bamboo culms are a single shoot of bamboo comprised of the entire unaltered cross-section of the bamboo.
The DTI-BPS is a Participating Member (P-member) to the ISO Technical Committee on Bamboo and Rattan (ISO/TC 296) since 2015. Currently, Atty. Dulce Blanca Punzalan, President and COO of Filbamboo Exponents, Inc. is the Convenor for Working Group on Bamboo Charcoal (WG 3), and was appointed World Bamboo Ambassador and World Bamboo Organization representative to the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit 2016. Likewise, Dr. Rico Cabangon, Chief of the Engineered Products Development Division under the Department of Science Technology – Forest Product Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) and BPS/TC 76 Bamboo and Rattan Chairman, is the Convenor for Working Group on Engineered Bamboo (WG 5).
These standards will promote common understanding among stakeholders in the bamboo industry. When implemented, these standards will contribute to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG):
